Mephisto’s New Spring 2012 Collection is Here!

It may be February, but this is the time of year when all our favorite manufacturers come out with their new Spring lines. Mephisto is no exception, and has a bunch of cute sandals and slip-ons to help you gear up for the warmer weather. Men and women both have a variety of options; here are a few of my favorites:

The Mephisto Women’s Niza: the ultimate easy-to-wear shoe. It’s a great casual slip-on with a nubuck leather upper. Mephisto’s Soft Air technology provides great cushioning as the shoe provides the outstanding support you’d expect from every Mephisto shoe. The leather lining allows your feet to stay cool and comfortable. This would be a fantastic shoe to wear with jeans, or even casual slacks. Available in Black Pearl, Dark Brown Pearl, or Dark Grey Pearl nubuck, this classic design is sure to be a hit.

Looking for a casual sandal? Check out the Mephisto Women’s Altina. You can walk for hours in this shoe! The sole and footbed are specifically designed to absorb shock. The cork footbed also provides outstanding stability. This could be that perfect shoe you want to take on a vacation where you know you’ll be doing a lot of walking, yet it looks like anything BUT a utilitarian shoe. Enjoy the stylish comfort of this beautiful sandal.

Men, if you need a dress shoe, consider the Gaetan. It’s a gorgeous shoe that you could wear with a suit, or even casual slacks. The classic design is made with smooth leather uppers, leather linings, and a cushioned footbed for added comfort. I really enjoy the bicycle-toe styled stitching on this shoe, it makes the shoe look very classy. This may be your new go-to shoe for work and beyond!

For a great new warm-weather slide, men will enjoy the Mephisto Men’s Zach. It has a mild rocker sole that really helps diminish leg strain as well as provide outstanding shock absorption.  You’ll definitely feel the support in the cork and latex footbed, and the soft leather upper feels great on your feet.

This is just the tip of the iceberg for the new Mephisto styles. Check out the web site and see what else might call your name!

Feeling Unbalanced? The EvenUp Foot Leveler Might Help!

I’m not talking about feeling a little mentally unbalanced, I’m talking about feeling physically unbalanced. If you’ve got one leg that’s a little longer than the other, or more commonly if you’re injured and have to wear an orthopedic boot, feeling physically unbalanced can be really painful. I remember when I had to wear an orthopedic boot when I had a stress fracture in my foot, I experienced a lot of pain in my hips due to walking unevenly. How ironic is it to have to go through pain elsewhere in your body as you get an injury to heal?! At last, those of us who have a height difference between their legs – particularly in the case of those wearing orthopedic implements – have a solution to this problem: the EvenUp Foot Leveler.

What the EvenUp Foot Leveler does is add a little extra height to an existing shoe. It’s a device that you put over your shoe so that you can be properly balanced. It’s dramatic how something as innocuous as a height differential between your legs can cause so much pain; the Foot Leveler can greatly improve your life as you heal.

Sizing for the Evenup works based on the measurement of the sole of the shoe (NOT your shoe size).  Size small correlates to a sole measurement between 10 inches and 11 ¼ inches. Size Medium works for a sole measurement between 11 ½ inches and 12 ¾ inches. Use a size Large for a sole measurement between 13 inches and 14 ½ inches.

There are actually two layers to the EvenUp, which can help you customize the height. The bottom layer is 1.3 cm thick. If you need a little more height, add the top sole to create an additional 2.1 cm. This can make a difference in your comfort level!

You don’t have to experience pain just from being physically unbalanced due to leg length or in particular when you have to wear an orthopedic boot. Try out the EvenUp Foot Leveler. Don’t go through extra pain while you heal from an injury!

Remember Earth Shoes? Now there are New Types for Everyone!

I remember the Earth shoes from the ‘70s. They had a negative heel, and were fairly clunky-looking. But they were popular and comfortable, and reflected the fashion sense of the day. Earth shoes are back, and updated for today’s tastes in fashion and comfort. There are actually three Earth brands available: Kalso Earth Shoes (the original wellness shoes with a negative heel), Earthies Shoes (very fashion  forward wellness shoes), and Earth Shoes (contemporary designs for the everyday working woman).

Kalso Earth shoes feature a negative heel, setting your heel slightly lower than your toes. Why is this a good thing? It helps you improve your posture and reduce stress on your joints. It also allows you to emulate the feeling of walking barefoot in sand, which is optimal for not just your feet but your entire body. The positioning of your body makes a world of difference in how your joints feel, so Kalso Earth excel in that realm. These shoes are available for both men and women, in a wide variety of styles!

For women, I particularly like the Kalso Earth Women’s Daily. It’s a great all-around shoe for everyday wear. It’s an easy to wear, slip-on shoe with a soft leather upper. You could wear this to work with dressier attire, or with casual clothes. Available in Black, Navy, Almond and Rosso, this could be your next favorite shoe!

A great shoe for men is the Kalso Earth Men’s Classic Too. Available in Bark Leather, this lace-up shoe is versatile enough to go with most of your wardrobe. It also doesn’t look clunky, so you can get all the benefits of the negative heel and have some style as well.

If you like feminine-styled footwear, you’ll love Earthies shoes. They are really stylish, fashion-forward designs that feature cupped heels, cradled footbeds, and a graduated arch support. Women can feel confident that they’ll get great support and comfort in very cute shoes!

The Earthies Cristiana is a gorgeous bootie with cutouts in the upper and a peep toe. This suede shoe has a 3” heel and a zipper in the back for easy on-off. Yet even with that heel, the cradle toe area distributes your weight away from the toes, and the anatomic arch provides outstanding support . Who knew that a shoe this beautiful could feel good on your feet?

Earth Shoes are designed for the everyday working woman. These contemporary designs include dress shoes for work, and casual shoes for the rest of your life. I particularly like the fact that they are stylish but don’t have huge heels, and are versatile enough to wear with most of my wardrobe! Comfort is key in this brand; each shoe contains a padded heel area to displace shock, reinforced arch support for stability, and multi-density latex cushioning to really pamper your feet.

My current favorite Earth Shoe is the Wisteria in Bat Leather. The footbed feels really soft and comfortable, yet supportive, and I love how the leather straps are actually two different shades of brown. The 2” heel makes this shoe really comfortable and easy to wear and I can spend an entire work day in these shoes with no issues at all. It looks good with dress slacks as well as jeans too!

The Earth brand – meaning Kalso Earth, Earthies, and Earth Shoes – covers all your footwear needs. Find a pair that makes you happy today!

Clogs that are Lightweight and Slip Resistant? Yes!

I’m a big fan of clogs. They’re always comfortable and I’ve had great luck with them helping my feet and back feel better. I love the support, and the different styles. Now there’s a new kid on the block with not only the great style and comfort I’m used to, but outstanding slip resistance: footwear by Klogs!

Actually, Klogs Footwear makes more than just clogs. They also make Mary Janes, and clogs with open or closed backs. There are even unisex models to choose from!

What sets this brand apart is the superb slip resistance of the sole. Klogs actually exceed the standard set by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) under dry, wet, and oily surface conditions. Isn’t it great to have peace of mind while you work that your shoes can help you avoid slips and falls?

All Klogs have cushioned, removable footbeds with deep heel cups that provide great shock absorption and support. The outsoles are non-marking, and the shoes are washable and durable. Available in either polyurethane or leather, they provide outstanding softness and comfort. You can even pop out the footbed to use your own orthotics or inserts. The polyurethane Klogs are even made in the USA!

I love the variety of styles available for men and women.  For an open back style, the Unisex Dusty is a great choice. This polyurethane model wipes clean with soap and water, and is a great all-around clog for extended wear. It’s available in a variety of colors, including white, chestnut, forest, and even “splatter.”

Fans of closed back shoes will love the unisex Naples. Comfort is assured with side elastic gores and a padded collar around the ankle. It’s available in a variety of colors and patterns, like lavender print leather, or taupe suede tapestry. There’s something for everyone in this model!

If you like Mary Janes, check out the Women’s Ashford. It has an adjustable hook and loop strap with a faux button detail to help you have a custom fit. As with the other Klogs models, the Ashford has a fantastic footbed that provides great arch support with antimicrobial, odor resistant properties.

Note on sizing: for unisex sizing, women should order their normal sizes. If a woman is a half size, go one half size UP. Men should order a full size up and WIDE. If a man is a half size, order up 1.5 sizes up and WIDE.

Not all clogs are alike! Take a look at the fantastic comfort and slip-resistant properties of Klogs Footwear. You’ll love how they feel over the course of the day!

Athletic Shoes for the New Year!

Isn’t everyone’s standard New Year’s Resolution to lose weight or get fit? Seems like this is an annual event for many of us! If you actually plan to DO this, you need to have comfortable, supportive shoes for the activity you choose. Why not treat yourself to a new pair of athletic shoes? Footwear etc. has a wide variety of shoes that would be perfect for all of your exercise needs.

I need motion control in my athletic shoes because I tend to overpronate. I also need outstanding stability and support, since my feet are prone to stress fractures. New Balance has just come out with an update to their popular 1123 model, the 1540. Available for both men and women, this shoe excels in stability for runners and is also a great shoe for walkers. The big difference between this model and the 1123 is that the 1540 is lighter. I love the fact that these are so easy to wear, I might even get up off the couch to do so! As always with New Balance shoes, there’s a nice high, wide toe box and great ventilation so that your toes aren’t squished and your feet stay cool and dry. They’re even certified under Medicare as a Diabetic shoe, so you know that they’ll be good to your feet. And they’re made in the USA!

ASICS makes some fabulous running and walking shoes. For walkers, the Gel-Tech Walker Neo 2 is a very supportive shoe that will make exercise walking or strolling very enjoyable. These are lightweight yet highly supportive shoes, and even have the Seal of Acceptance from the American Podiatric Medical Association. They are designed to enhance your foot’s natural gait while providing maximum comfort. Definitely worth a try! ASICS also makes some outstanding running shoes, for your neighborhood or the trail. Check them out!

Need new hiking shoes? You can’t go wrong with Merrell products. They were designed for great support and rugged durability. I really like the Moab – my favorite version is waterproof and can take whatever trail has to dish out!  The anatomical footbed keeps your feet supported, while the breathable bellows tongue and mesh upper keep your feet cool and comfortable. The Moab is available in an oxford style as well as a mid-boot for both men and women, and are fantastic for those weekend outings.

Fans of Barefoot running shoes will be thrilled by the choices from Vibram Fivefingers. The KSO model for both men and women is a particularly nice all-around shoe, suitable for running, water sports, yoga, and other fitness activities. They’re flexible, are slip-resistant, and really let you feel the pavement under your feet. If you don’t know anything about barefoot technology, definitely check them out to see if they are right for you! Many runners swear by these shoes. If you don’t want a lot of support, these could be the answer to your prayers!

These are just a few models from some of our favorite brands to help entice you off the couch this year. Stay motivated, and treat your feet kindly with some new athletic shoes!

Not all Shoe Laces are Created Equal!

If you’re like me, you never think about shoe laces until one breaks on you. But when it does, keeping your shoe on properly becomes a big hassle. Footwear etc. carries several brands of laces, which can work on all sorts of shoes!

Need dress shoe laces? Check out the Mephisto replacement shoe laces in black. These 80 cm long cotton laces are specific for dress shoes and are a round, braided style. They’ll look great with all sorts of dress shoes!

For casual or walking shoes, Mephisto also makes replacement laces in tan, and black. These are 90 cm long and are flat and woven from 100% cotton. You can also get them in Birch or Espresso in 90, 115, 120, and 130 cm lengths.

Ecco also makes replacement shoe laces that are suitable for many types of casual walking shoes. Available in white and black in 32” lengths, these round braided laces are treated with wax for extra strength.

Cadillac has an interesting type of lace, called the Comfort Lace. These black rope-shaped laces are 30” long, but contain collapsible knots. These knots produce “tension zones” at each eyelet, which helps you maintain tension in particular areas. These laces eliminate the need to keep retying your shoes due to slippage. The Comfort Lace shoe laces are a great choice if you find you need to re-tie your shoes more than you’d like to.

Don’t be fooled by cheap knock-offs; the Mephisto, Ecco and Cadillac laces are very high quality and hold up well over time. Consider any of these when you need a new pair of laces!

New for Winter: More Rugged Shoes from Allrounder by Mephisto!

Sometimes you just need rugged shoes. Mephisto, a leader in quality footwear, has an entire division devoted just to these shoes: Allrounder by Mephisto. There are brand new styles ready and waiting for your outdoor activities, so take a look!

The Men’s Shogun is a fantastic shoe for those weekends in the Great Outdoors, or even as a casual yet rugged shoe for everyday wear. You’ll love the cushioned, anatomical footbed that makes walking so comfortable. (If you need to use an orthotic, you can always remove this footbed.) Shock absorption is outstanding in this model, as is the durability of the outsole. This is a great all-around rugged shoe for men.

In women’s styles, check out the Naroma. I love the Naroma because it’s waterproof! It’s a sporty-looking shoe with a black nylon and suede upper, and orange accents in the upper and in the outsole. The removable foam latex insole has a really helpful arch support, perfect for helping your feet stay comfortable during those long hikes. The shock absorber heel is also really handy for helping you avoid fatigue. The rugged outsole is just the thing you need for those uneven, slick surfaces.

Allrounder by Mephisto even came out with a Mary Jane style, called the Niro. If there’s such a thing as a girly yet rugged shoe, this would be it. The Niro has a 1-inch heel, and a strap over the top of the foot, yet has all the properties of a rugged hiking shoe. The outsole has grip even on slick ground, the shock absorption is outstanding, and the soft latex foam padding provides additional comfort at the instep and ankle. Given it’s a Mary Jane style, it’s a breeze to get on and off too!

Before that next outing in the Great Outdoors, take a look at the rugged shoes of Allrounder by Mephisto. Your feet will appreciate the comfort over all sorts of terrain.

New Balance 1123MC – For All of Us, Not Just for the Serious Runner

Given that I have assorted foot problems, I always look for athletic-styled shoes that provide exceptional support for whatever activity I might attempt. Most of the time for me, that’s just walking. I particularly needed a reliable shoe for all the walking I knew I’d do on my last vacation, and went back to my favorite brand of athletic shoes: New Balance. I have yet to go wrong with this brand, it has everything I need. I was intrigued by the 1123MC, even though it’s technically a running shoe, but it ended up being a great shoe for me! Here’s why:

This shoe is designed as a high-mileage trainer for runners who require maximum motion control and stability. While I am not a runner, I definitely need the stability. My right foot is prone to stress fractures, so having the extra stability and support is very helpful. This shoe contains Abzorb SBS, which is an engineered foam that provides outstanding shock absorption in the heel and forefoot. For enhanced stability, there is a rollbar that controls pronation and supination.

This shoe also contains the usual outstanding features found in all New Balance shoes, including a wide, high toe box to allow your toes room to move, exceptional durability, lightweight comfort and support, and mesh in the upper to help keep your feet cool. The 1123MC got me through Europe, and it gets me all through my neighborhood on my daily walks. I feel good about choosing a shoe that provides all the stability I need to avoid reinjuring my foot.

Runners tell me that this is a superb shoe for over and under pronators. Avoiding repetitive stress injuries is key to a successful athletic shoe, and the 1123MC provides as much stability and support as you can get in a running shoe.

Even Diabetics can feel good about wearing this shoe given its outstanding support properties and roomy toe box. It’s even rated under Medicare/HPCS code A5500 as a bona-fide Diabetic Shoe. Available for both men and women, it’s a great shoe for everyone!

Don’t be intimidated by a shoe that’s advertised as “a high mileage trainer” if you’re not a runner. The New Balance 1123MC is a fabulous shoe for all of us.

Plantar Fasciitis and Neuropathy – What Do You Wear if You Have Both?

I received an interesting phone call from a customer a few days ago. Her situation was particularly interesting because she has both Plantar Fasciitis as well as Neuropathy. She has worn MBT shoes for several years, and it greatly helped her Plantar Fasciitis. She was actually looking for a new boot that she could wear in sloppy weather but was concerned about how her MBTs would hold up in snow.

This set off all sorts of red flags in my head, for a variety of reasons:

1)      MBTs are not designed for people with neuropathy. When you have sensory loss in your feet, your balance is adversely affected. Wearing a shoe that provides natural instability creates a huge risk of you falling. As a result, MBT does not recommend its shoes for people with neuropathy.

2)      MBT shoes, even the GTX models, are really not designed for tromping around in the snow. Yes, they are waterproof, but they do not provide the level of traction that a bona-fide snow boot does. So yes, you can wear your MBT shoes out in sloppy weather, but I’d stick to regular snow boots if you’ve got any level of accumulation on the ground.

3)      Neuropathy sufferers really need stable shoes. Regardless of what caused the Neuropathy, those folks should look for the same types of shoes as those folks with Diabetes. Generally, you should look for: a MILD rocker sole (to help propel you forward) but with a stable heel, and a high, wide toe box so that your toes won’t rub against the shoe. Any shoe with a lot of support is also excellent. Look for shoes that are soft and with cushioning if possible. It’s also helpful to find a shoe that can accommodate custom orthotics, just in case.

Generally, any shoe that is rated HPCPS (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System) A5500 compliant is acceptable for Diabetics under Medicare and Medicaid.  These are fine choices for people with Neuropathy and Plantar Fasciitis as well due to their excellent supportive properties.

Finding shoes that help both of these medical conditions can be a challenge, but Footwear etc. carries a bunch of shoes that are worth considering.

Drew Shoes are specifically designed for Diabetics, but also have many of the supportive properties needed for those with Plantar Fasciitis. Available for men and women, they come in a wide variety of styles.

Finding slippers for Plantar Fasciitis as well as Neuropathy is a little tricky. While they are not specifically rated for Diabetics, the Orthaheel slippers are definite possibilities. I would suggest you try them on and see if you have enough toe space for these to work for Neuropathy patients. They definitely have good supportive properties and can help Plantar Fasciitis. Qwaruba makes some front and side wrap slippers that are definitely gentle for your feet, although they are not particularly supportive. If you’re not going to do a lot of walking, these could be beneficial.

New Balance makes some great athletic shoes that address both of these issues.  I would particularly look at the models that have the HPCPS A5500 rating. I particularly like the New Balance MW927BK walking shoe (and the corresponding WW927BK for women). It’s very stable, has a roll bar for motion control, is lightweight, and has great cushioning and support. This is a great all-around shoe.

Don’t assume that the products needed to alleviate Plantar Fasciitis and Neuropathy symptoms are mutually exclusive. There are a variety of shoes out there that can be beneficial. Try different types of shoes to see what works best for you!

Just in Time for the Holidays: Men’s Dress Shoes from Bostonian!

My dad wore dress shoes to work every day. My husband breaks out dress shoes just a few times a year. With the holidays coming up, more and more men are going to need comfortable dress shoes, and Footwear etc. now carries a brand steeped in tradition: Bostonian.

Bostonian has been around for a long time – over 110 years. This is the first brand that introduced flexible dress shoes, and over the years has come up with new technological and styling innovations to keep men happy.  Currently, Bostonian features models that combine athletic-shoe technology with dress and casual shoe styles, so this brand is a great choice for men seeking comfort as well as beautiful craftsmanship.

Men have a huge variety of styles to choose from.  Like slip-ons? Consider the Ballard Bit, or the Martin. I particularly like the Evanston since I love tassels. How about a lace-up shoe?  Check out the Pollino, or the Howes. For all you wing tip fans, there’s the Luglite Wing or the Andover. How about Penny Loafers? There’s the Pershing. These models are just the tip of the iceberg; Bostonian makes many more styles in a variety of colors. All of them are made with leather uppers, soft linings, and flexible outsoles that have great traction and stability. There’s a tremendous amount of versatility in this line; you can wear them with anything from khakis to a tuxedo!

Don’t assume that men’s dress shoes are uncomfortable. Bostonian has been making comfortable dress shoes for many years, and has perfected the art of creating comfort footwear.  Give them a try this holiday season, and beyond!
