And you thought Earth shoes looked oddball! Take a gander at these bad boys! Perhaps you've seen these on the feet of over-zealous power walkers and thought, "What is UP with those shoes??" Well, I'm about to tell ya. Say hello to the mother of all rocker-soled shoes, the MBT.

MBT stands for Masai Barefoot Technology. The shoe is engineered to create natural instability, similar to walking in sand or other soft surfaces, which in turn activates the muscular system to stabilize the body in a natural way.  The first time I wore my MBT Kaya's, it felt like I was standing on mini wobble boards. I had to stand up straight and tighten up my abs and glutes in order to find my balance. But once I took a few short walks, I started to get the hang of my new shoes. In fact, over the last week, I've preferred taking power-walks in the MBT over going to the gym. Not only are these shoes comfortable, I can totally feel my whole backside toning up--from calves, to thighs to bum. And my joints? No pain. My knees, hips, ankles are all feeling FINE.  You know what's so wonderful?  I see the hard sidewalk, but I don't FEEL it. At all. It's almost as if I'm really walking barefoot on the beach...except it's 32 degrees and I'm wrapped in polar fleece.

Hear what Sharon Seagrave, two time Olympian and MBT spokesperson, has to say about her "anti-shoe" experience:

Makeda Saggau-Sackey, writing in the D.C. Fashion&Style Examiner section of the San Francisco Examiner, shares:

Move over Dansko, there's a new kid on the block vying for the bragging rights to designing the most comfortable and stylish shoes. Asgi, a three year old Italian shoe line hit the U.S. market with the promise of scientifically designing comfortable shoes that women would want to wear.  The shoe brand, founded by Patrick Hogan, a podiatrist and Maggie Mercado, a shoe designer, is becoming a go-to brand for women looking for comfortable shoes that can go from the board room to the ballroom. The brand offers an assortment of loafers, booties, Mary Jane's and walking shoes all designed with a patent pending technology called Soleplex.

Footwear etc. carries a beautiful selection of this comfortable and stylish shoe. Here are a few styles to consider:

Marcy Mary-Jane -- Black Nappa Leather

Roma Bootie -- Black Calf Leather

Splendor Mary-Jane -- Black Suede

In recent weeks, the blogosphere has been abuzz - and surprisingly so - over the presidential candidates' choice of footwear -- particularly that of Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

Politics aside, one has to admit it is great to see her pull off a variety of styles that have inspired women everywhere to view sensible footwear as chic.  Whether you agree or disagree with her personal and political views, you've got to admire her choice of shoes that feel as good as they look!  "Feel good and look good" is a mantra Footwear etc. believes in and aims to share with the world.

We've been paying close attention to Palin's comfy clogs, signature wedge slides, fashionable patent and croc leather heels, and the notorious knee high boots. In an effort to build on her stylish influence, we offer here a short selection from our popular Dansko, Mephisto, BeautiFeel and Ecco lines that we feel are worthy of a nomination for Election '08 favorites!

USA Today recently published a wonderful piece on the very busy Tina Fey,  star of 30 Rock and now famous Saturday Night Live Sarah Palin impersonator.

A busy woman clearly needs comfortable shoes, and the article notes her footwear choice:

"In an industry in which a woman can be either gorgeous or funny but rarely both, she's the rare exception. Fey can star in her own American Express ads, chasing Martin Scorsese through an airport, and rock a fancy David Meister frock on the red carpet. But she's still a comedy nerd, not entirely at home in the spotlight and still most comfortable in her broken-in Dansko clogs, which she slips into on set when the camera stops rolling.

And therein perhaps lies the key to Fey's appeal. Even when she was first garnering attention for her writing on Saturday Night Live, Fey came across not as a ham, but as the smart, polite girl next door — even as she gently layered on the sarcasm and wit."

Take a look at what Footwear etc. has to offer in the way of Dansko clogs. We can't guarantee you'll be transformed into the next SNL writer/performer when you slip them on, but we've heard from many customers that Dansko shoes offers great comfort for those on their feet all day.

The folks at MBT shoes have come up with 30 reasons to walk that will get you up out of your seat. Go to mbt30reasons.com to find them all, as well as to find out how to download 30 free songs perfect-for-walking. Take the "30 Walks in 30 Days" challenge, too.

Once you commit to the challenge, visit Footwear etc. to find a stylish, comfortable pair of MBT's that fit your needs and you'll be safely on your way.

For most of us a stylish pair of comfortable shoes is a dream come true. They look good, fit well, and make me look fantastic. What more could I ask for?

How about a shoe line that fits the above bill AND walks lightly upon the environment! It's not enough to think about ourselves these days. With each purchase we now need to ponder, "How will this affect my children's future on this fragile planet. Is this product 'green'?"

Naot is a line of footwear we've carried for quite some time and now two of their styles, the Naot Matai and Esteem, were featured in the 2008 Going Greener issue of Footwear Plus.

Give these Naot styles a try and comfort of feet can be accompanied by comfort of conscience.

When Team Territory Takers asked if we'd sponsor their participation in the Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk we decided to send each member a pair of MBT Women's Boost (Rose colored, of course, in honor of the pink theme) to ease their long journey. Here is what they wrote after completing the arduous trek:

I am so happy to say that WE MADE IT!  The MBT shoes were absolutely terrific and 4 of the 5 ladies of our team managed to complete the full 60 miles without blister or problem (including no aching feet or muscles).

In the end the event raised over 4 million dollars towards the fight against breast cancer and we were so happy to be able to contribute to this cause.  There were so many inspiring stories along the way from breast cancer survivors, their spouses or people walking for friends or relatives, as well as how the funds have aided in this fight.  It is an event that has profoundly affected my life and I am so glad to have been able to do it.

MANY people asked about the MBT's and we saw some other walkers with them as well.  We made sure everyone knew that Footwear Etc. was the place to get them and also sported the logo on our t-shirts.

Thanks again for all your support.

 Sincerely,

Team Territory Takers

You too can make a difference in the fight against breast cancer and the search for a cure. Consider participating in the Breast Cancer 3-Day event when it takes place in a city near you. Take a look at their website for more information.

About a year ago, I discovered a new passion: running. How many other activities would allow me to lose inches while getting fresh air and catching up on my “reading” with my MP3 player full of audio books? But running also had some serious cons… the biggest of which were BLISTERS.

It’s amazing how miserable those running blisters can make you. Sadly, I had taken the time to fill my iPod with the latest John Grisham novel, but I hadn’t properly cared for the most important part: my feet! Then I came across the Thorlo Thick Cushion Running Socks, and let me tell you, I had met my sole mate. They are the perfect running socks, with a comfort-cushioned footbed that reduces shock and chafing, while preventing blisters. And what about the blisters that I already had? Well the Thorlos are also made with performance fibers that keep the foot amazingly cool and dry. Without any extra moisture in the sock, my heels could heal in no time.

The Thorlo socks come in a variety of styles and thicknesses, but the Thick Cushions are definitely the best for running. They offer protection to the max for long workouts, and they’ve really allowed me to go the distance. Fast forward to a year later, and I’ve already completed a half-marathon and am training for the full 26.2 next spring. Luckily with my Thorlos, I’ll be crossing that finish line in stride. And that's not an easy "feet!"

Thorlo Running Thick Cushion Unisex Socks come in crew, mini-crew, micro mini-crew and rolltop styles. My personal favorites are the micro, for minimal tan lines, or the rolltop for extra heel support. They also come in different colors, and now at Footwear etc. you save 10% if you buy 3 or more pairs.

Summer is the time for a lot of things… but most of all, it is the season of love. I’ve certainly had something get my attention this summer, and I’m not just talking about the cute guy who works at the coffee shop down the street. Yes, in addition to my infatuation with that java-brewing Matthew McConaughey look-alike, I’ve also fallen for the Taos Serena Sandal. The Serena leather T-strap is adorned with rugged metal grommets and stitching and is secured by a buckle that is embellished with earthy, colored stones. They’re casual yet trendy, classy yet funky and perfect to show off my freshly pedicured toes. When I find myself walking to the corner for yet another iced vanilla latte, I dress to impress in a tank top, denim skirt and my red leather Serenas. In addition to the red, you can also get them in colors similar to the iced coffees that my beautiful blonde barista serves… in mocha brown, black or with cream!

Once I’ve had enough caffeine, I get on my health kick and walk a few blocks past the coffee shop to the juice bar. Luckily the Serenas are such great walking shoes, I don’t have to worry about going the extra quarter mile for my healthy protein smoothie. Taos sandals give such great support with the molded EVA footbed that contours and cushions like no other, and the Serena sandals are no exception. They’re so breathable, so durable and so comfortable that it’s hard to believe they can feel as good as they look. And the rubber outsoles absorb shock and provide traction, it’s almost as if they’re giving as many benefits as the extra vitamin boost that I add to my Banana Berry Blast.

The Taos Serena Sandals are the perfect blend of something that has both good taste and is good for you. Now if we could invent a beverage to do both things, I’d only have to make one stop!

My sister, who works as an RN in labor and delivery, swears by her Dansko Professional Clogs. She claims she can stay on her feet for hours on end without pain appearing in her knees or back with these classic comfort shoes on.

Recently, however, she's been singing a new tune following her purchase of a pair of Dansko Sela sandals. "Most comfortable, versatile pair of sandals I've owned in years," she told me. "I can wear them with dresses, capris, or crop pants and they always look great."

After trying on a few pairs she recommends that you order one size above your measured size. They seem to run a little small.

Footwear etc. offers this style in a variety colors.

Walking around town on my vacation I noticed my tennis shoes didn't feel quite right.  Sitting to rest at a local cafe, I checked inside of my shoes and found the insoles had holes in them.   I had heard that Spenco made great insoles, so using my trusty web enabled cell phone I found the nearest seller of Spenco products and purchased a pair of the Polysorb Cross Trainers.  I felt like a new woman; my feet felt like new too!

I trimmed them slightly to fit and they slipped easily into my shoes. Once I was walking again I could feel the difference.  Even though they were a soft insole they had the arch support I needed as well as the shock absorption in the heel.  With all the walking we had to do on this trip, Spenco surely saved the day.

They also make more of an orthotic insole with a cast on the base to give a much firmer feel to the foot.

Try Spenco, you wont regret it.

Summer is the best season. With all of the barbecues and beach days, picnics and peach pies, fireworks and family vacations- it’s all so much fun.

But my favorite parts of summer (though the peach pies are a close second) are the SHOES. And what, my friends, is the consummate summer footwear? Why, the sandal of course! This summer, I was on a mission to find the ideal sandal… one that would be comfortable enough to be on my feet at those beach days and picnics, but also stylish enough to wear with shorts and flowy dresses.

Well that mission proved to be not impossible when I came across the Geox Tori Sandals. The black leather T-strap upper is adorned with a ring detail and is so smart and stylish (and sexy!), that they make the perfect transition from a day shoe to a night shoe. I just wore them for the entire day on the 4th of July: from early morning walking the parade route, to an afternoon of window shopping and all the way into the evening of trekking to the optimum fireworks viewing spot. And let me tell you, I had an independence day of my own as I was free from the blisters and bruises that usually plague me when I spend so much time on my feet.

Best of all, the adorable Tori Sandals are the perfect shoe for braving those hot summer days. Just like with the Noah Flats, the patented Geox insole wicks away the moisture one can so easily accumulate in a heat wave to keep you dry and comfortable. So if it’s the high temps that are making you sweat, or the nerves before a blind date on the boardwalk, either way you’re in the clear.

If you want to get a little fancier (something I am ALL for), the Geox Tori Sandals also come in a version with a sassy buckle. Those come in black and cognac, perfect to match those flowy summer dresses of any color. They’ll be sure to become your #1 summer loves… the peach pies may just have to settle for second place.

Also, hurry and save 10% off all regular priced sandals and an extra 10% off of sale priced sandals! The offer ends July 31, 2008!

The San Francisco Chronicle Travel editor, John Flinn, has written a wonderful article on packing light for travel. With airlines now charging for check-on bags, the tips given by John are well worth considering.

One suggestion given in the article is to pack fewer pairs of shoes, choosing styles that can serve several purposes. Here is what John, an avid traveler, recommends based on his experiences:

Ecco Track IV:

John writes, "Choosing a single, versatile pair of shoes that meets all your needs is one of the keys to packing light. The Gore-Tex lined Ecco Track IV, described as a 'rugged hiking Oxford,' sports leather uppers that pass muster in West End theaters and lugged soles that perform well on pub walks in the Cotswolds."

Footwear etc. has a few styles of Ecco shoes Track IV. Take a look by clicking on the picture of the shoes.

Merrell Chameleon
:

John adds later in the article, "for hiking trips with just a little bit of city, I bring a pair of light hikers, as they're called, low-top hiking shoes such as Merrell's Chameleon."

Waterproof, sturdy, wonderfully comfortable -- what more could you ask for in a stylish hiking shoe? We have a few styles of Merrell shoes similar to the Chameleon at very good prices.

New Balance Country Walkers
:

John concludes his shoe recommendations with the following advice: "For trips more or less divided between city and country, I wear New Balance's Country Walkers, a good all-around compromise."

One great advantage of New Balance shoes is that they come in a wide range of widths and sizes. Footwear etc. is proud to carry a large selection of New Balance shoes in all widths from 2A to 6E.

Yesterday I walked 5 Kilometers in my Keen sandals during the Lance Armstrong Livestrong Challenge in San Jose, California, and felt like I was strolling on soft clouds the entire distance. I love my Keen Newport sandals -- they're ultra-comfortable, form fitting, supportive, and the toe cap protects my vulnerable toes from bumps and scrapes (frequent for a klutz like me). I own this style in several colors and wear them for informal family gatherings as well as hikes with friends in the foothills.

Shoe mavens will talk at length about the advantages of this finely designed "outdoorsman" sandal: it's completely waterproof (and machine washable), has gripping non-slip tread, an anti-microbial in-sole, and so on. What sold me on these Keen shoes was COMFORT. If I can walk five kilometers on the asphalt roads of a major metropolis to help raise thousands of dollars for Cancer patient support and return home with happy feet and knees, I'm certainly ready to share how keen I am on Keen Newport.

Footwear etc. has many Keen choices (many surprisingly stylish) worth trying on. Visit us on-line or in one of our many stores.

Until now, I’ve had two uses for cork. It’s the material on the back of my bulletin board that I tack shopping lists to, and it’s the little stopper that seals my champagne. So when I hear that cork can also be comfortable on the soles of my feet, I become as bubbly as a bottle of brut.

Allow me to introduce you to the Mephisto Babata sandal. It turns out that the same low-density, high-elasticity, near-impermeable cork material that holds up my list of supermarket needs, also contours to my foot and cushions to offer arch support like no other. So that’s good. But then the real question that I know is on your mind:

Can a shoe this therapeutic also be cute? Well, I’m so glad you asked!

While the footbed is cork, the upper is soft calfskin leather that comes together to form a fun and flirty flower. Thanks to the floral accent, the Babatas can easily be dressed up or dressed down. The 1-inch heel also offers a nice slimming effect to the legs, so don’t be afraid to pair them with that cute short skirt either.

So whether you’re running errands to cross items off your grocery list, or at an event where you’re popping open bottles of bubbly, the Mephisto Babatas with the cork support are the perfect combination of comfort and style, both casual and dressy. Anyone who tells you differently… you can tell them to put a cork in it.

Footwear etc. offers a wonderful selection of Mephisto shoes; if the flower on the Babata is too ornate for your taste, take a look at the simpler Mephisto Helen.

My feet sweat. By the end of a day in a simple closed shoe I feel like I'm walking in puddles, fearing those striding beside me can hear the "squish, squish" emanating from my shoes with each step. Aside from the unwelcome discomfort of soggy feet, what most worries me is the stinky stench that may waft about when I take the shoes off to get some much needed ventilation. My simple solution has been to wear stylish sandals as often as possible, but I've always dreamed of a good looking shoe that would breath with each stride.

Geox shoes claim to have designed "the shoe that breathes." I find their television advertising delightful -- worth watching a few times over (click the play button below) -- and frightfully close to home.

Customer reviews on a variety of websites are compelling:
"I'm a believer! I used to be a die-hard fan of Aerosoles for my daily office workhorse shoes, but I am a Geox convert now. . . [F]or anyone who suffers from hyperhidrosis (sweaty feet), these are just unbelievable."
I have to admit that the designers of these shoes have devised a seemingly clever system -- micro-holes in the rubber outsole that let perspiration from the feet out of the shoes with the protective breathable membrane keeping water out and the feet dry.

What is clear from the comments of those who wear Geox shoes is that they are comfortable:
"Great, comfy shoe! This shoe is so comfortable and cute! The cushion is so soft and thick, it feels comfortable to walk in all day long! I put them on as soon as I got them and they felt comfortable right away."
